We are 1297 Stonehaven Squadron, part of the Air Cadets and funded by the Royal Air Force. We offer brand new experiences for people aged 12-20 and a wide range of qualifications to help you live life to the fullest.

As 2025 draws to a close, we marked our final parade night of the year with our annual Christmas Quiz! We introduced some new rounds this time, including a word scramble ❓.

A huge congratulations to Team “Sneaky Santas” for coming out on top! 🏆 It was a close finish, with our Staff team ending up just 2 points behind the winners.

Helicopter Simulators 🚁

Last Thursday, our Cadets and staff visited Bristow's in Dyce. The visit offered a fantastic hands-on experience with two of their high-tech helicopter simulators. These simulators, based on the Sikorsky S-92 and S-76, are used to train pilots on various scenarios without needing to use the actual aircraft ✈️.

This visit allowed our team to truly experience what it's like to fly these aircraft, tackling various scenarios and routes that are part of a pilot's routine.

A huge thank you to the Bristows' team, especially to Captain Steve Bell and Mr Clift-Leitch, for organising this fantastic visit. We are already looking forward to the next time! 😁

Success at Regional Competitions Day

On Sunday, personnel from North Scotland Wing travelled to HMS Caledonia, Rosyth, to take part in the annual Scotland and Northern Ireland Region Competitions Day.

1297 (Stonehaven) Squadron are delighted to announce the following results:
🥇Air Rifle (Individual) – Sgt Strachan – 1st Place
🥈Air Rifle (Individual) – Cdt Edmond – 2nd Place
🥉Air Rifle (Team) – 1297 (Stonehaven) Squadron – 3rd Place

Personnel from across the Wing were also formally recognised in a variety of awards by the Regional Commandant, Group Captain Khan.

CWO Archie Braidwood was presented with the Purdie Sword as the Best Cadet in Scotland and Northern Ireland Region. This comes after an extremely successful Cadet career, most notably completing the Junior Leaders course and mentoring those across the Wing and Region in Fieldcraft, along with a range of shooting at National level. Now aged out, Archie travels down to RAF College Cranwell this weekend in the hopes of being named the Dacre Sword winner for the Best All-Round ATC Cadet. Best of luck!

These achievements are a testament to the commitment, preparation, and determination shown by our cadets in the lead-up to and during the competition.

Well done to all who took part and congratulations to everyone across North Scotland Wing on another successful year at Region Competitions.

Visit from the new Wing Commander

Wing Commander Smith came and visited #team1297 a few weeks ago, to learn more about our cadets and we have been up to as a squadron. We also got a chance to ask questions about his career within RAFAC.

WO Campbell and CI Murdoch both received certificates of recognition for their service by the Air Commandant aswell as Sgt Strachan accepting the shooting trophy on behalf of the air rifle team.

Cyber Skills 🛰️

A few weeks ago 1297 Sqn hosted a Bronze Cyber course for North Scotland Wing with attendance from Portlethen, Westhill and Inverurie Squadrons.

On this course the cadets learnt about how to stay safe online and different ways hackers can use to steal their data. This enables the cadets to be safer individuals online as they are now more aware the dangers of the internet.

Last month 6 of our cadets had the opportunity to go flying at RAF Leuchars. They were flying in the Grob Tutor and were putting the it to the test by performing various aerobatics including barrel rolls and stall turns!

Their flights awarded 4 cadets with their Blue Wings after already completing their ground training in the squadron prior to their flight.

Last Thursday, @aberdeenshiredroneguy joined us to discuss their different types of equipment and their uses, as well as how they support local services in rescues, inspections and more 🛟.

Our Cadets also got to fly one of the drones to test their skills in navigating an obstacle course, as well as a demonstration outdoors of how drones work and their capabilities 🖥️.

We're thrilled to announce that Cadet Warrant Officer (CWO) Braidwood has been named Best Cadet in Scotland and Northern Ireland!

This incredible achievement reflects years of dedication, outstanding leadership, and a true commitment to the organisation.

CWO Braidwood's journey has been truly remarkable! Last year, he mastered the rigorous Junior Leaders course, demonstrating exceptional strategic thinking and leadership skills. His passion for fieldcraft has also significantly boosted training at Wing and Regional levels, sharing vital skills with many cadets. 🏕️

He's a fantastic mentor, creating a positive and encouraging environment for everyone. As our squadron’s senior cadet, his leadership has empowered our NCO team, with many now on track to become instructor cadets. 📈🤝

CWO Braidwood will now compete nationally against the top regional cadets in the UK, with the aim of being shortlisted for the organisation's best Cadet.

We're incredibly proud of all his achievements and wish him the best of luck at the next stage 👏

Last Thursday, we were joined by Mrs Cumming & Mr Nakote from the @asthmaandallergyfoundation; a charity that provides information, advice, and support to those with asthma and their families across Scotland.

Our cadets learned valuable skills to help someone with an asthma attack or an allergic reaction and learned about other people's stories and experiences.

Over the weekend, she tackled 100m sprints and showed off her shooting skills with moving Snap Targets from 100m to 300m. 🎯 After all that hard work, receiving Silver Advanced Marksman.

Our Junior Cadets also gained skills in First Aid ⛑️ As they just completed their Blue First Aid Training and passed their assessments.

Aiming High 🎯.

Over the past few days, Sgt Abram, along with our team, have been at the Inter-Service Cadet Rifle Meeting 2024 (ISCRM).

Sgt Abram has managed to receive her SECOND Cadet 100 award after placing 24th in the competition. The Sergeant’s achievements also saw her be selected for the RAFAC team, competing against the best from the Sea and Army Cadets. Placing herself 3rd, gaining 46.1 out of the 50 points that was achievable 🥉.

These incredible achievements, along with a high standard of shooting in and outside of the squadron has seen her excel, though it doesn’t stop there. She remains down south to compete in the Imperial Meeting over the next few weeks.

We congratulate Sgt Abram's achievements and wish her the best of luck for her next competition 👏.

On top of that, he participated in a drill competition at the camp in Foot and Arms Drill, performing a group drill sequence. This will aid the squadron as we prepare for upcoming wing-level competitions.

We were pleased to announce that FS Fraser has been promoted to Cadet Warrant Officer, the highest rank achievable in a Cadet’s career, after her successful promotion board on Monday evening.

She has been an integral part in developing the cadets skills in aviation and radio qualifications within the squadron and also at wing level 🗺️

CWO Fraser was also fortunate enough to be taken on last year as a Flight Staff Cadet at @661_vgs, after successfully completing her gliding scholarship just last year ✈️.

This comprehensive training prepares them to contribute to the regional coaching team for upcoming competitions like ISCRM, benefiting squadrons across Scotland 🏆.

On Monday, our Cadets were learning presentation skills to help with their Dragons Den Pitches next month.

This included identifying the attributes of a good presenter and how to make a logical, well structured and clear presentation 📝

Our Cadets are busy working on their pitches for our Dragon’s Den-style activity, run by our NCOs.

This involves them working as a team to produce a pitch for something that could benefit the squadron which could include new equipment, a fundraising campaign or a similar idea. 🏰.

Later this month we will be giving them training on how to make a good presentation🧑‍🏫.

REWARDING SUCCESS FOR 2023! 🏆

A fantastic evening was had by all yesterday evening with presentations and cadets being awarded for their various achievements during 2023, from our Cadet’s Best Cadet to our Shooting Award.

- Our first award went to Cdt Sgt W Smith. They were awarded the Pathfinder Trophy by CWO A Braidwood. It is awarded to the cadet who has given it their all and had a go at everything on offer in the organisation.

- Cdt Cpl Grant was awarded the Academic Trophy by Sqn Ldr Derek Nutten (Deputy Officer Commanding Wing) for attaining the highest average scores in their exams.

- The Shooting Award was awarded to Cdt Cpl Abram by WO Campbell for demonstrating shooting excellence in 2023.

- Sgt Parker, Sgt Taylor and CWO Braidwood were each awarded a Bronze Medal for placing third in the entire corps in the Air Rifle Postal League by Sqn Ldr Nutten.

- Cpl Abram, Sgt Parker, Sgt Taylor and CWO Braidwood were each awarded a Silver Medal for placing 2nd in the Winter League by Sqn Ldr Nutten.

- Our Best Recruit Trophy was awarded to Cdt Edmond by Flt Lt Stephen (Wing Fieldcraft Officer) for showing the most potential during Junior Cadet Training.

- The Tiger Moth Trophy was awarded to Cdt Cpl Strachan by Flt Lt Stephen for showing the greatest overall improvement in the squadron.

- The Best Cadet Runner-Up was awarded to Cdt FS N Fraser by Sqn Ldr D Nutten for gaining the 2nd highest points overall, who was unfortunately unable to attend the evening.

- Finally, The Best Cadet was awarded to Cdt Sgt A Braidwood by Sqn Ldr Nutten for gaining the highest points overall.

A massive congratulations to all the cadets who received awards yesterday. Of course, thank you to all the cadets and staff who helped keep the evening running smoothly, and for your continued hard work and dedication in the squadron 👏.

A big thank you also to our Squadron Civilian Committee and the @castletonfarm for the lovely cakes! They have worked tirelessly in the build to the evening to plan, decorate, serve and host the event! We couldn't do it without you!

Cdt McLoughlin and Cpl Grant were both awarded their Bronze Cyber Awards after recently completing their iDEA award, which they have been working hard on in the squadron 📝.

Cpl Grant was also awarded his Master Classification badge, the highest classification level achievable, and his Blue Wings Training Badge after completing his Ground Training and flight last year.

Coastguard Visit 🚁

Last Thursday, we were visited by the team from Stonehaven Coastguard.

This allowed Cadets to gain an insight into what they do and their equipment ��🛟.

This included their fleet of Helicopters for support in high terrain areas and out at sea, and even down to the hooks and pulley systems used alongside rescue equipment 🪢.

On Thursday Wing Warrant Officer Donaldson (North Scotland) on behalf of Wing Commander Copsey had the pleasure of promoting FS Braidwood to Cadet Warrant Officer, which is the highest rank achievable in a Cadet’s career.

This comes after a successful promotion board with the Wing Commander earlier this week, with many months hard work within the squadron and taking part in Junior Leader’s (the top leadership course in the Air Cadets) 🪖.

We also had 2 Cadets receive certificates for completing courses at Wing Skills Camp in October:

- Cdt Sharp was awarded his Silver Cyber Badge after completing the CyberFirst Defender’s Course.

- Cdt Cpl Grant received his Bronze Communicator Badge after completing Bronze Radio Training.

A massive congratulations to CWO Braidwood on his promotion and to those who received their badges 👏.

The Royal British Legion also presented a certificate to Flt Lt G Craig Rtd (who was a previous OC and CI at 1297 Squadron) for his outstanding 50+ years of service and being the Remembrance Parade Commander since 1982 👏.

We’d also like to thank the Royal British Legion in Stonehaven for organising and providing soup and sandwiches after the ceremony.

We hold intake events throughout the year. If you are aged 12 (in S1), and up to your 17th Birthday you can join us. We are even on the lookout for adult volunteers!
